An injury doesn't happen to one person. When someone in the house is hurt, roles shift overnight. One partner becomes a driver, nurse and bill-payer; kids notice the tension; the injured person can feel like a burden in their own home. Home Front is a coaching track for the household, adapted from Krystalore's Relationship Remodel work.
What changes at home
- Roles: who earns, who drives, who cooks, who handles the paperwork.
- Routines: appointments, rest and new limits reshape the whole family's day.
- Emotions: frustration, guilt, worry and grief often show up as irritability.
- Intimacy and connection: time together can turn into time managing the injury.
- Money stress: reduced income is one of the biggest strains families describe.
Temperament: why you react differently
People handle stress in different ways. One of you wants to talk it through right now; the other needs space. One wants a plan; the other needs reassurance. Home Front helps each person name their temperament and stress style, so a difference stops feeling like a personal attack.
Tested far beyond the living room
Temperament, personality, emotional intelligence and effective communication are topics Krystalore developed into curriculum at the Pentagon for the entire military. Home Front brings that same work home, adapted for couples and families living with an injury.
Communication tools you'll practise
- The daily ten-minute check-in: how are you, what do you need, what's one thing that went well.
- "I notice / I feel / I need" statements instead of blame.
- Repair: how to come back after a bad moment, because you will have some.
- Kid-sized explanations of what's happening, honest and age-appropriate.
Boundaries and roles that fit this season
Home Front helps you renegotiate who does what, temporarily and kindly, and protect some space that isn't about the injury: a walk, a show, a meal, a joke. We also work on boundaries with extended family, friends and work, including how to say "not right now" without guilt.
Individual and family sessions
You can come on your own, as a couple, or with other family members. Partners and caregivers are also welcome in the Caregiver Circle. Home Front is coaching, not couples or family therapy; if you want clinical support, Therapists.plus lists licensed therapists, including family therapists.
Safety at home
If anyone in the home is unsafe, contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (or text START to 88788). If you are thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) any time. In an emergency, call 911.
Talking about money without a fight
Money is one of the hardest topics after an injury, because it carries fear as well as numbers. Home Front gives couples a simple structure: pick a calm time, look at the facts together, agree on one or two decisions, and save the rest for next week. Questions about benefits or your claim belong with your attorney or case manager; Home Front helps you have the conversation at home without it turning into blame.
Coaching and education only, not couples or family therapy. If you are thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) any time. In an emergency, call 911.
